"345 West Channel . . . Residence of Dr. George Lewin, who kept the canyon fire engine in the 1930s and who collected pit bulls, which he kept in sturdy pens at the rear of the house. In recent years, this was the home of artist Sam Francis*, who had a studio here as well as nearby in Venice. He made frequent trips to Paris, Tokyo, Point Reyes, and New York, but spent much of his time in the canyon. Confined to a wheelchair during the last months of his life, he nevertheless paintted 150 new works before his death in November 1994."
