    • French Rose Painter, Grower, Real Estate, 2009, 1911, 1900s, 1898,
    • A newcomer artist who succeeded at the real estate game, 1935, 1900s
    • He is most renowned for his beautiful and botanically exact watercolor paintings of flowers, particularly roses.
    • His garden was often the source for his artistic inspiration.
    • He was called "Le Roi de Fleurs" (The King of Flowers) and won many awards during his lifetime, 2009, 1900s
    • Born in to a family of noted artists, Paul de Longpre started painting as a young child.
    • Although the family had a distinguished name, it had little money.
    • At the age of twelve, Paul joined the family pursuit of painting flowers as patterns for the textile mills that proliferated in Lyon, at the time a center for the European silk industry.
    • He became well known for his renditions of flowers, especially roses.
    • He gained wide popularity in France before coming to the United States and settling in New York City, around 1890.
    • The lure of California's year round sunshine and blossoms brought de Longpre to Los Angeles in 1898.
    • He held a large exhibition of his flower paintings and met with immediate success.
    • One of his patrons was the widow of the original developer of Hollywood, and in 1900, de Longpre bought a sizeable parcel at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Cahuenga Avenue valued at $3000.
    • The price for the tract was paid in the form of an exchange for three of his paintings.
    • He built a large, Moorish-style mansion and planted a three-acre garden boasting more than 3,000 rose bushes.
    • His garden became the first tourist attraction in Hollywood.
    • He is most renowned for his beautiful and botanically exact watercolor paintings of flowers, particularly roses. His garden was often the source for his artistic inspiration. He was called "Le Roi de Fleurs" (The King of Flowers) and won many awards during his lifetime.

    • Paul DeLongpre,
    • a French artist who worked in Paris and New York before settling in Los Angeles in 1899,
    • began painting flowers as a young child and by age twelve was earning a living painting them on fans.
    • Watercolor was his primary medium.
    • Flowers were popular in Victorian society, where specific blooms symbolized things like love and constancy.
    • In America DeLongpre painted them on greeting cards and also as easel paintings.
    • His style is what some would call "French" for while his subjects have botanical accuracy, their overall feeling is one of delicacy and lightness.
    • Cactus Blossoms stands out from DeLongpre's usual subject of cultivated flowers-such as roses, which he grew in his own garden in Hollywood-because the plant, which may be a variety of Mammillaria, is native to southeastern California.
    • Here he presents it at its most spectacular- during its once-a-year blooming.
    • Although DeLongpre used all manner of compositions ranging from single sprigs against a white background, to cut flowers in vases and flowers strewn on tabletops, Cactus Blossoms is an example of his flowers growing in situ.
    • De Longpre's House, Studio and Gardens was a very popular Hollywood stop on the Baloon Route
    • A few years after his death, the house was demolished and
    • The site is now part of the "Hollywood Walk of Fame" in downtown Hollywood. In his memory, one of the streets near his property is now called De Longpre Avenue, 2009

      • That the nation's public schools suffered severely during the depression of the 1930's is undisputed. New school construction, except in rare instances was out of the question, and in some districts funds for even ordinary repairs were lacking. Some schools were forced to shorten the term so that teachers' salaries might be saved. In many communities, because of shifts in population and for other reasons, schools were badly overcrowded, with pupils often receiving only half-day instruction because of a lack of classrooms. [21. H.H. Linn Some Practical Suggestions for W.P.A. Works in Public Schools, American School Board Journal, 92, March, 1936, 27-29.], 1952, 1936, 1930s
      • Additional work projects of the W.P.A. meanwhile were paving playgrounds, turfing athletic fields, landscaping and refencing school grounds, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • Wherever possible, the school administration found work for as many men and women as the Works Progress Administration would provide, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • Office workers were placed with the Board of Education and in the offices of the several schools, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • Various art projects received administration support since these served to beautify the school plants, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • For many school children in Santa Monica today, the depression of the 1930's is a thing about which they merely have heard. But they cannot fail to be impressed with the pieces of sculpture, the paintings, the fountains, which are a part of nearly every school in Santa Monica, and which came to life under the stresses of that dark period in the nation's history, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • Only those who lived through it can fully appreciate the larger values of the projects carried on by the W.P.A., 1952
      • The employment provided and the resultant stimulation of business did much to bring the city of Santa Monica from the worries of the depression to a more stable economy that followed. [28, Pearl, op. cit., p. 64.], 1952, 1939, 1937, 1936, 1931, 1930s
      • An appraisal of the work accomplished by the Board of Education and the W.P.A. would certainly reveal many values to Santa Monica and its schools. Total expenditures reached nearly $3,000,000, of which the Board of Education supplied less than $950,000, or about 32 per cent of the total cost. [31. Beach Cities Labor Journal, Santa Monica Schools Edition, October, 1937, p. 3.], 1952
      • Clearly, despite the period of severe economic stress through which the schools had gone from 1931 to 1939, they emerged from the depression strengthened both physically and educationally, 1952, 1939, 1937, 1933, 1931, 1930s
    • Post depression Inflations, 1952, 1946
      • In September of 1946, the architect firm of Marsh, Smith and Powell was commissioned to draw plans for the new college, such plans to take into consideration use of existing buildings and the new ones as proposed. These plans were only in the preliminary stages when soaring postwar building costs prompted the Board to call a halt on the project. [74. Ibid., pp. 17-18.], 1952, 1946

        • In which 37 miners died, 1943, 1869
        • Three adjoining mines (the Crown Point, the Kentuck, and the Yellow Jacket) were working on the same east ore bodies from the 600- to the 900-foot level
        • and their extensive stopes were a maze of large resinous pine timbers.
        • The fire, of unknown origin, started on the 800-foot level of the Yellow Jacket and had been burning for several hours without knowledge owing to heavy doors in the drifts . . .
        • when the men on the morning shift were lowered down the shafts a mass of charred timbers in the stopes broke under the weight of the roof, sending a blast of deadly gas and smoke through the workings of the three mines.
        • A few were hoisted back, many were suffocated, and others burned . . . three days . . . heroic efforts were made to reach the remaining men. When it became clear that all below were dead and that not even their bodies could be recovered at that time, the shafts were sealed , 1943, 1920-1850
        • [p. 123] "The last descent into the Crown Point prior to the second sealing of the shaft was made on April 12 (the fire occurred on the 7th) by Superintendent Jones and a young man who tried to connect a pipe with the blower tube. Foul air drove them out after fifteen minuets without making the connection.
        • After the shafts were sealed large volumes of steam were forced into the workings to check the fire.
        • Those mines, which had been among the most productive on the Lode, were practically ruined. The caved stopes smouldered for months and yielded but little good ore afterward.
        • Instead of paying dividends all three mines began to levy assessments., 1943

Two were killed outright and seven permanently injured. The escape of the others from death was little short of miraculous. Luckily none fell down the shaft, 1943, 1879
